Grain City – Sheffield Wheat Project Documentary

wheat

Regather Farm has hosted Sheffield Wheat Experiment since 2020. Giving up a large part of our land to support this project that aims to reconnect people to the food they eat.

Go to any food bank or surplus food project and you will see the huge amounts of bread that goes to waste every day. According to research by anti-food waste organisation Wrap, 680,000 tonnes of “avoidable” bakery waste is disposed of each year at a cost of £1.1bn.

Sheffield Wheat Experiment could not be further from that daily supermarket reality. The wheat is hand grown, harvested and processed, by a community that wants to engage with food again and value it.

In the short documentary ‘Grain City’ the Sheffield Wheat Experiment re-imagines alternative grain economies through hand growing, harvesting and processing a population wheat for and of Sheffield via a dispersed farm, spread across an entire city. Through understanding the impacts of industrialisation on our daily bread, the artwork reconnected people to the land and the seed and explored alternative systems that embody new values, making food more than just a commodity.

The documentary contains many shots from Regather Farm – with the first 3 minutes almost exclusively showing the growing process on our farm.
