Catch up with Doug from Regather Farm

How did you find last year’s growing season?
Doug: We had a tough season in 2023. Our plans for expansion were tempered by some challenging weather for most of the year particularly in spring and late summer; key times for ground preparation and planting out. Almost impossible in seemingly never ending rain. Plus the slugs had a great time and ate more of some crops than our customers!

What are the main things that you are feeling hopeful about at the farm this year?

Doug: We’ve had a big rethink in our approach based on the challenges of 2023. We’ve a new crop plan and, we think, better soil which has made for a good start to 2024. If we carry on like this we’re set for a good year.

One thing that they love about organic growing?

Doug: Watching the other plants and animals thrive alongside our food production. Feels special to share the farm with so much varied life!

Is there a seasonal vegetable that we should be looking out for?

Doug: Spinach Leaf Beet which we’ve overwintered in the polytunnels is coming into its prime right now: vibrant deep green leaves which taste delicious.
