Diane Cluck - Lamplight Club
April 23 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

The Lamplight Club – Diane Cluck + Avital Raz

It’s always a pleasure to welcome back the one and only Diane Cluck. The Virginia-based singer-songwriter of intuitive folk music has been influential in the development of the Anti-folk scene and has collaborated with Jeffrey Lewis and CocoRosie. Her performances here over the years have always been very special and we're looking forward to hosting her. Get in there quick as it will be a busy one! “Diane Cluck is a virtuosic talent with an emotionality that feels at once ancient and alien. Her mastery of her voice as an ecstatic instrument is so compelling.” – Anohni (of Antony & The Johnsons) (£12)

Best of ShAFF – Paddle To The Amazon

Their plan was surprisingly simple, their journey anything but. Don Starkell and his two sons, Dana and Jeff, would paddle and portage south to the Mississippi River system along the Gulf of Mexico and on to the head of the Amazon. Battling a barrage of internal and external conflicts, their epic canoe trip threatens to take them beyond their physical and psychological limits. Don and Dana Starkell face unimaginable challenges from both the natural world and the human world. While they anticipate their biggest challenge to be from nature, it is their unwitting entrance onto the battlefields of social and political strife that threatens their lives. In short, being in the wrong place at the wrong time sees them attacked by pirates, arrested for being spies, shot at and mock-executed. No less intriguing is the evolving relationship between father and son who for 2 years spend 24 hours together within the confines of a canoe, a situation that comes to blows of its own as father and son jockey for dominance. With determination, grit and sometimes sheer madness Dana and Don Starkell survive their paddle to the Amazon and enter The Guinness Book of World Records for the longest trip ever made by canoe.

Toby Marks & Andrew Heath present Motion

'Motion’ is a new collaborative album from established sound artists, Toby Marks (Banco de Gaia) and Andrew Heath. Four immersive soundscapes were created and compiled featuring field recordings from recent trips to the North, South, East and West of Britain. Each trip took as it’s theme a particular form of transport which, in addition to other environmental sounds from those areas, were processed and transformed, blending piano, guitars and electronics to produce a deeply meditative, endlessly unfolding collection. Sometimes evoking images of machinery, sometimes of nature, the pieces flow and twist, at all times maintaining a humanity and sense of personal experience at their core.

In a Vulnerable Place - Steve Waters Festival of Debate
May 23 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

In a vulnerable place – Play written and performed by Steve Waters

Part of Festival of Debate Festival. Steve Waters’s first one-man show is a very personal journey into the present tense reality of climate change. Returning to Sheffield with a new play after acclaimed shows at The Crucible, it tells the story of encounters he has had with people in the Norfolk Broads (a landscape under a death penalty) and in Mongolia (a place experiencing the temperature rises scheduled for the rest of the world by 2050) as he discovers a world where there’s ‘so much left to fight for’.

money is weird - festival of debate
May 24 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Money Is Weird (Festival of Debate)

When it comes to money, Laurence Peacock (BA English Lit, 2008) definitely knows what he’s talking about. OK, fine, he really doesn’t. But he’s tried his best to find out…

From the mind that brought you ironic tax advice (Dodge&Co, Festival of Debate 2017/18) comes a show about money and how profoundly weird it is. Join Laurence as he tries to answer the fundamental questions: What is money? Where does it come from? And will you give him £7 to talk about it for 50 minutes? No? What if he throws in some jokes and promises to keep the graphs to a minimum? Alright, fine! £6. Geez…

Audience Responses to Dodge & Co’s ‘Tax Dodger’s Guide to Fargate’:

“Garners laughter and despair in equal measure.”

“Very eye-opening.”

“Interesting… Surprisingly interesting, actually.”

Tickets: £6
